If this system is installed directly on a sloped (attic) ceiling, can it insulate as effectively as external thermal insulation, reducing or eliminating thermal bridges?

“In slope” installation, although not standard, is still provided for. We specify that the system itself cannot be considered a substitute for the building envelope’s thermal insulation, but only as a contribution to the overall insulation that would be required.
